Imperial supercharges discovery with new Schools of Convergence

Imperial College London today announced the launch of four new Schools of Convergence Science aimed at supercharging scientific discovery, driving economic growth, and addressing the world’s most urgent challenges — from climate change to AI, space tech to global health.

These mission-led powerhouses of innovation will unite Imperial’s excellence across science, engineering, business, and medicine – much of it already successfully convened here in White City Innovation District. The new schools will break down barriers between disciplines to deliver real-world impact at speed across four key areas:

The event was addressed by Lord Vallance, Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation; Imperial President Professor Hugh Brady; Imperial’s Vice Provost for Research and Enterprise Professor Mary Ryan and the heads of the new Schools: Professor Anthony Bull (The School of Health and Technology); Dr Mirabelle Muûls (The School of Sustainability); Professor Alessandra Russo (The School of Human and Artificial Intelligence); and Professor Jonathan Eastwood (The School of Space, Security and Telecoms).

Convergence Science is a transformative approach to research – bringing together disciplines, sectors and methods to tackle society’s most complex challenges. It moves beyond collaboration to deep integration, combining knowledge in novel ways to develop breakthrough tools, languages, models and, ultimately, solutions.

The Schools of Convergence Science are a central pillar of Imperial’s Science for Humanity strategy, which launched in 2024 and outlines how Imperial plans to maximise its potential and impact as a force for good in the world.

“Every day, Imperial’s staff, students and partners come together to interrogate the forces shaping our world, confront society’s most urgent challenges, and shape a better future. That shared mission is at the heart of our success.
“These new Schools of Convergence Science will deepen our commitment to this cause – pursuing scientific progress and impact with exceptional energy, courage and scale to tackle the most complex problems of our time.”

Professor Hugh Brady, President of Imperial College London

Recently ranked second in the world in a major global university league table – and currently home to the UK’s highest proportion of world-leading research – Imperial is continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible with this landmark move.
