SUMMARY:I-X Research Talk: Bayesian Structure Learning: Empowering Policy Through Causal Inference with Dr Roman Marchant
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores how Bayesian Structure Learning supports evidence-based policy\, drawing on research from the Human Technology Institute (HTI) and the Thrive program. Professor Marchant will begin by introducing their methodological cycle\, which integrates Bayesian Networks (BNs)\, structure learning\, expert knowledge\, and community co-design to inform decisions in complex social settings. \nAssuming familiarity with BNs\, Professor Marchant will focus on recent advances in causal discovery—covering models\, inference algorithms\, and sequential decision-making strategies. Case studies in childhood obesity\, mental health\, and education demonstrate how these methods reveal actionable distinctions between proximal and upstream causes\, enabling more targeted interventions. \nProfessor Marchant will also discuss key methodological challenges\, such as population heterogeneity and the need for mixtures of BNs to yield nuanced\, individualised insights. In addition\, he will highlight the emerging role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in leveraging unstructured text data to inform causal models. He will conclude with a forward-looking view on the role of Bayesian approaches in creating adaptive\, context-sensitive policy tools that are both rigorous and socially responsive. \nLocation: Hybrid Event: In-person & On-line (via MS Teams)\nI-X Conference Room | Level 5 |  Translation and Innovation Hub (I-HUB)

SUMMARY:I-X Seminar: Logically-Consistent Deep Learning
DESCRIPTION:Join I-X for the next event in its popular seminar series. Dr Antonio Vergari (University of Edinburgh) will be delivering a talk entitled “Logically-Consistent Deep Learning”. \nHybrid location:  I-X LRT608A level 6 (I-HUB) & via Teams \nSeminar Summary \nGuaranteeing the safety and reliability of deep learning models is of crucial importance\, especially in many high-stake application scenarios. In this lecture\, I will focus on the key challenge of designing probabilistic deep learning models that are reliable and yet efficient by design. I will do so within the framework of probabilistic circuits: overparametrized and computational graphs that are just neural networks with lots of structure\, enough to guarantee the tractable computation of the probabilistic reasoning scenarios of interest\, while not compromising their expressiveness. Second\, I will discuss how we can use circuits to build a reliable foundation for neuro-symbolic AI. That is\, for example\, to provably satisfy certain constraints we can express in propositional logic in neural networks as to increase their performance and robustness. These models can be thought of being “verified by design” and I will showcase some recent applications of this constraint satisfaction by design e.g.\, scaling link prediction in graphs with millions of nodes and when constraints are both on continuous and discrete domains.

SUMMARY:I-X Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Dr Pasquale Minervini (University of Edinburgh) will be delivering the next I-X seminar\, entitled “Integrating Symbolic Algorithms in Neural Models (and LLMs)”. \nSeminar Summary \nNeural models\, including LLMs\, can exhibit remarkable abilities; paradoxically\, they also struggle with algorithmic tasks where much simpler models excel. To solve these issues\, we propose Implicit Maximum Likelihood Estimation (IMLE)\, a framework for end-to-end learning of models combining algorithmic combinatorial solvers and differentiable neural components\, which allows us to incorporate planning and reasoning algorithms in neural architectures by just adding a simple decorator. Finally\, we’ll discuss some very recent extensions of these ideas for making LLMs teach themselves how to use tools. \nHybrid event: I-X LRT608A level 6 (I-HUB) & via Teams \n

SUMMARY:AI: Cutting-Edge Overviews & Tutorials
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join I-X on-site or online via Teams for Dr Felipe Tobar’s Cutting-Edge Overviews & Tutorial Seminar\, Optimal Transport for Machine Learning and Data Analysis.  \nIf you wish to attend in person\, please register here for building access purposes. Registration will close on Sunday 2 February at 12:00 GMT. \nAbstract: \nOptimal transport (OT) provides a general-purpose framework to quantify the discrepancy between two probability distributions by “lifting” a distance defined on their support to the space of probability distributions. In the last decade\, the impact of OT in machine learning (ML) cannot be overstated: current OT-powered extensions have been applied to GANs\, VAEs\, dimensionality reduction\, and model selection with applications on genomics\, health\, finance\, audio\, robotics\, and astrophysics. In this tutorial\, I will introduce OT and show its use in the development of ML applications\, all with the aim of encouraging the adoption of the OT toolbox by those using AI/ML tools in their scientific research. The tutorial will start with the usual formulations of OT and historical context\, to then discuss metric properties\, computational considerations\, and the celebrated Wasserstein barycentre. We will see demonstrations of the main OT algorithms in the form of Jupyter Notebooks. \nBio:\nFelipe Tobar is a Senior Lecturer in Machine Learning at the Department of Mathematics and I-X at Imperial. Previously\, he was an Associate Professor at Universidad de Chile (2021-2024)\, a Researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (2016-2020)\, a postdoc at the Machine Learning Group\, University of Cambridge (2015)\, and obtained his PhD in Signal Processing from Imperial in 2014. Felipe’s research lies in the intersection of Statistical Machine Learning and Signal Processing\, including approximate inference\, spectral estimation\, optimal transport\, diffusion models\, and Gaussian processes. He has taught postgraduate courses on statistics\, machine learning and deep generative models\, and has led data science projects on conservation\, health\, astronomy\, gender studies\, and retail.
