SUMMARY:AI: Cutting-Edge Overviews & Tutorials
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join I-X on-site or online via Teams for Dr Felipe Tobar’s Cutting-Edge Overviews & Tutorial Seminar\, Optimal Transport for Machine Learning and Data Analysis.  \nIf you wish to attend in person\, please register here for building access purposes. Registration will close on Sunday 2 February at 12:00 GMT. \nAbstract: \nOptimal transport (OT) provides a general-purpose framework to quantify the discrepancy between two probability distributions by “lifting” a distance defined on their support to the space of probability distributions. In the last decade\, the impact of OT in machine learning (ML) cannot be overstated: current OT-powered extensions have been applied to GANs\, VAEs\, dimensionality reduction\, and model selection with applications on genomics\, health\, finance\, audio\, robotics\, and astrophysics. In this tutorial\, I will introduce OT and show its use in the development of ML applications\, all with the aim of encouraging the adoption of the OT toolbox by those using AI/ML tools in their scientific research. The tutorial will start with the usual formulations of OT and historical context\, to then discuss metric properties\, computational considerations\, and the celebrated Wasserstein barycentre. We will see demonstrations of the main OT algorithms in the form of Jupyter Notebooks. \nBio:\nFelipe Tobar is a Senior Lecturer in Machine Learning at the Department of Mathematics and I-X at Imperial. Previously\, he was an Associate Professor at Universidad de Chile (2021-2024)\, a Researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (2016-2020)\, a postdoc at the Machine Learning Group\, University of Cambridge (2015)\, and obtained his PhD in Signal Processing from Imperial in 2014. Felipe’s research lies in the intersection of Statistical Machine Learning and Signal Processing\, including approximate inference\, spectral estimation\, optimal transport\, diffusion models\, and Gaussian processes. He has taught postgraduate courses on statistics\, machine learning and deep generative models\, and has led data science projects on conservation\, health\, astronomy\, gender studies\, and retail.

A member of the National Academy of Sciences\, Stuart has been honoured with prestigious awards such as the Arthur Cope Award and the Wolf Prize. His academic journey began with a B.A. from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. from Harvard. After teaching at Yale\, he joined Harvard in 1988. Stuart is a prolific entrepreneur\, having founded over a dozen biotech companies\, including Vertex and Ariad Pharmaceuticals. His latest venture\, Arena BioWorks\, aims to revolutionise drug discovery. \nAbout the Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Annual Lecture:\nThe Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson Annual Lecture celebrates the legacy of Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson\, a pioneering English chemist whose six-decade career at Imperial significantly advanced inorganic chemistry and homogeneous transition metal catalysis. Sir Geoffrey’s journey began in 1939 as an undergraduate at Imperial\, where he later completed his PhD in 1943. After gaining international experience\, he returned to Imperial in 1956 as a Professor of Chemistry\, a position he held for 32 years. His ground-breaking work in organometallic chemistry earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1973\, and he was knighted in 1976. Even after becoming Professor Emeritus in 1988\, he continued to contribute to the field with a small research group. In 2022\, the Department of Chemistry inaugurated this annual lecture to honour his remarkable contributions.

SUMMARY:What You Always Wanted to Know about Graph Embeddings (And Never Dared to Ask)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Ismail Ilkan Ceylan (University of Oxford) \nSeminar Summary \nThis talk will present the core methodologies and techniques for deep learning with graph-structured data along with some recent advances and open problems. We will start by answering questions such as “why learning representations of graphs are useful?” firmly linking learned graph representations to various application domains — particularly applications in life sciences. We will then move on to the question of “what are the common principles behind existing (successful) graph learning architectures?” which will be answered staring from first principles. We will then discuss some existing challenges and how they are addressed in our recent works (and how they open more avenues for future work). This talk is tailored for a rather broad audience and no specific background will be assumed. \nRegistration will be open until 10 October.

SUMMARY:Take a deep breath?
DESCRIPTION:Join Imperial College London’s School of Public Health – based in White City Innovation District – for Professor Benjamin Barratt’s Imperial Inaugural – online or in person. \nJoin the lecture live on the Imperial YouTube channel. \nSummary \nOver the past two decades\, awareness of air pollution and its health impacts have changed dramatically. What was once a specialist topic of little interest to the public\, is now a hot topic that can make or break political campaigns. Driving this transformation is more robust evidence of how breathing polluted air affects our health\, coupled with more accessible methods to inform populations and policy makers of these risks. New technology\, datasets and models can uncover increasingly precise patterns and associations between our health and the environment. However\, in this age of ‘big data’\, it is easy to forget that behind every statistic is a person. \nBen Barratt is a Professor of Environmental Exposures and Public Health at Imperial College London. For the past 25 years he has worked to improve the health of populations through better air quality. His team have been instrumental in advancing the field of air pollution exposure science in clinical\, epidemiological and behavioural studies. In his inaugural lecture he will explore how we can improve public health by empowering the most vulnerable in society\, from miniaturised technology through to knitting. He will tell the story of individuals\, who\, without the use of AI or machine learning\, have driven change by helping to make the invisible visible\, the irrelevant relevant and the distant local.

SUMMARY:JAWDROP Fireside: Boosting Trust to Advance Health & UK Life Sciences
DESCRIPTION:Trust is a cornerstone of effective health systems\, influencing every interaction between the public and healthcare providers. This Jawdrop Fireside will explore how enhancing trust can lead to better public health outcomes and bolster the success of the UK Life Sciences sector. \nIt builds on previous Jawdrop themes\, such as optimising clinical trials and strengthening the UK’s resilience against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and future pandemics and aims to delve into the pivotal role of trust more broadly including around health in local communities. \nPANEL 1: Engaging Communities and Building Trust for Vaccines \nChildhood vaccination rates in the UK have dipped\, with no vaccines meeting the 95% target and the country seeing a re-emergence of measles\, a previously eradicated illness. Globally\, the picture is mixed\, with rates for long standing vaccines including BCG and HepB3 falling\, others remaining stable or\, in the case of new vaccines\, inching up. \nIn the UK\, vaccine uptake has benefited through active public health campaigns. Yet\, such progress is threatened by factors including the easy and rapid spread of online disinformation. It is also hindered by the growing mistrust in government and dissatisfaction with the NHS. Our panel consists of public health practitioners\, vaccine-makers and academics\, all of whom seek to build strong relationships and trust\, through different channels and means. \nPanelists: \nDr Nicola Lang\, Director of Public Health for H&F Council \nDr Philip Cruz – Moderna UK\, Country Medical Director \nPhayza Fudlulla\, BME Health Forum \nChair: Professor Helen Ward\, Professor of Public Health\, School of Public Health\, Imperial \nPANEL 2: Engaging Communities and Building Trust for Clinical Research \nClinical research is essential for advancing medical knowledge and developing new treatments. The 2022/23 CRN annual statistics show research participation levels have increased on pre-pandemic levels. Almost one million participants (952\,789) took part in clinical research across England. This is an increase of over 220\,000 on pre-pandemic levels. \nHowever\, patient trust in clinical research can be fragile\, influenced by factors such as past unethical studies\, lack of transparency\, and concerns about privacy and safety. In the UK\, a global hub for medical research\, initiatives to rebuild and enhance this trust are particularly crucial. London’s diverse population and advanced healthcare infrastructure make it an ideal setting for clinical trials\, but these same factors also present unique challenges. \nPanelists: \nNaima Adan\, Community Engagement Officer\, Patient Experience Research Centre (PERC) \nLuke Devey\, BMBCh\, Ph.D.\, Chief Medical Officer\, Quell Tx \nPauline Hakutangwi\, Novartis UK – patient engagement representative \nDr. Keerti Gedela\, EDI Lead\, CRN North West London \nCHAIR: Dr Bob Klaber\, Consultant General Paediatrician and Executive Director of Strategy\, Research and Innovation\, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

SUMMARY:I-X Seminar: Rough Analysis and Anomalous Streams with Professor Terry Lyons
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid event: link to join online via Teams. \nFor on-site attendees\, a networking lunch will be provided at the end of the seminar.  \nSeminar description: \nMulti modal streams of information arise naturally in many engineering contexts. Rough path theory is an area of mathematics that fuses the control theory of Sussmann\, Brockett and Fleiss with the analysis of Young to form a calculus that can efficiently describe the interaction and evolution of complex oscillatory systems. \nOne mathematical tool coming from this theory is the signature of a stream. Using software packages like RoughPy one can reduce an interval of streamed data to a relatively parsimonious vector representation known as the signature that is independent of the intensity of sampling in the stream. RoughPy provides tools for working with streams. The signature feature has many significant mathematics properties and has emerged as a suitable starting point in a range of practical challenges\, leading to a number of prize winning and innovative outcomes. \nOne challenge in streamed data is to start with a corpus of ‘normal’ streamed data and recognise that a new stream is not plausibly from the same family defined by the corpus. One advantage of the theoretical perspectives is that one can design methods\, such as this outlier detection methodology that respects natural invariants of streamed data. For example\, outlier scores should produce the same outcomes if \n\nthe corpus and the data are rescaled (e.g. from Fahrenheit to centigrade)\na channel is duplicated or not\nthe streams are pre or post pended by common meta data.\n\nA signature based method that achieves all these invariants has shown value in several real world applications. \nSpeaker Bio\nProfessor Terry Lyons is the Wallis Professor Emeritus and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and visiting Professor at Imperial College London. He is currently PI of the DataSıg program (primarily funded by EPSRC)\, and of the complementary research programme CIMDA-Oxford. He was a founding member (2007) of\, and then Director (2011-2015) of\, the Oxford Man Institute of Quantitative Finance; he was the Director of the Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (WIMCS; 2008-2011). He came to Oxford in 2000 having previously been Professor of Mathematics at Imperial College London (1993-2000)\, and before that he held the Colin Maclaurin Chair at Edinburgh (1985-93). \nProfessor Lyons’s long-term research interests are all focused on Rough Paths\, Stochastic Analysis\, and applications to the use of data science with streamed data particularly to finance\, healthcare\, human computer interfaces and more generally to the summarising of large complex data. More specifically\, his interests are in developing mathematical tools such as neural rough differential equations and software tools like RoughPy that deal with mathematical operations like shuffle product and logarithm for elements of the tensor algebra. These tools\, and rough analysis more generally\, can be used to effectively model and describe high dimensional systems that exhibit randomness as well as the complex multimodal data streams that arise in human activity. Professor Lyons is involved in a wide range of problems from pure mathematical ones to questions of efficient numerical calculation. DataSıg is a project that bridges from the fundamental mathematics to application contexts where novel techniques for analysing streamed data have potential to contribute value; these contexts include mental health\, action recognition\, astronomy\, cybersecurity\, … The CIMDA-Oxford research partnership aims to address a broader range of mathematical and engineering challenges arising from multi-dimensional big data. \n
